MOOKTZENG LIM MSc., PhD, CEng. MIMechE

Mooktzeng Lim @ Lim Mook Tzeng @ Miller Lim

Senior Consultant for Energy & Chemicals Industry

(formerly a Principal Researcher in biomass, plasma and perovskite technologies)

Breakthroughs in 2025

  • I designed configurations, created cost of production models and evaluated technoeconomics of crude oil-to-chemical plants (COTC) that are optimized for:

    • maximum fuel production

    • maximum olefins production

    • maximum aromatics production.

  • Also developed cost of production models and evaluated technoeconomics for Fuel Cells in different regions in terms of the LCOE (USD/MWh)

  • Pick of the bunch is the plastic pyrolysis report which gained a lot of attention more than 4000 views!

  • The reports are all available on FGE NexantECA (after FGE and NexantECA merged in May 2025).

Renewable Feedstock Conversion Pathways

  • It's been a while since my last entry into the blog, mostly because I have been adapting to my new position as a Consultant.

  • Since March 2023, I have authored off-the shelve reports related to ethylene, ethylene glycol, propylene, xylene production technologies.

  • Special topics include liquid organic hydrogen carriers, comparing techno-economics and carbon intensities of hydrogen supply chains.

  • Another special topic was on pre-treatment technologies of renewable feedstocks for biofuel, chemical and heat or power production.

  • The following Sankey diagram shows the various conversion pathways of different renewable feedstocks.

  • It had 3000+ views on my LinkedIn account in 14 days. Probably the first and last time I would be getting that many views on a single post.

  • I guess it's worth commemorating on a blog post.

Making circular bar plots in R!

Making Radial Charts with Tableau

  • Toyed with Tableau on data visualization methods during the long weekend.

Slugging on

  • It's been a year since Malaysia's first lockdown began to curb the spread of covid-19.

  • Admittedly I haven't achieved as much as I would've liked.

  • I've managed to complete the first phase of a project on the dry reforming of biogas, connected to an engine.

  • On-going activities include a fluidized bed pyrolysis process.

  • Here are some photos and slides:

Data Science & Analytics

  • On the 18 March 2020, a movement control order (MCO) was imposed in Malaysia to try and flatten the infection curve of covid-19.

  • It's equivalent to a lock down.

  • I took the opportunity to enroll in the a data analytics and data science course in Python & R.

  • Some interesting visualization of data is shown below:

Launching of DASB-TNBR-KEPRI demonstration scale biomass pre-treatment plant

  • on the 23rd Oct 2018, a one-tonne per hour biomass pre-treatment plant for empty fruit bunches (EFB) was officially launched.

  • the pre-treatment plant is a collaborative effort between Korean Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI), TNB Research Sdn. Bhd. (TNBR) and Detik Aturan Sdn. Bhd.

  • located in Kuala Selangor, the pre-treatment plant has demonstrated that alkali metals in the EFB can be reduced to acceptable levels for use as fuel in biomass fired power plants.

  • the plant produced >75 tonnes of pre-treated shredded EFB for combustion trials in a 10 MW biomass fired power plant.

  • the results from the combustion trials showed that the pre-treated EFB is able to:

    • increase the efficiency of combustion

    • reduce particulate emission

    • reduce potassium content in the fly & bottom ash

    • reduce fouling and slagging propensity in the boiler

  • the three companies are now looking forward to scale-up and commercialize the process for mass production of pre-treated EFB.

This work shows an example of a research outcome being adopted by the industry, with significant interest and collaboration from KEPRI, DASB, and the biomass fired power plant.

Amanda Lea-Langon's visit to TNBR

  • from 13 to 17 Aug 2018, I welcomed Dr. Amanda Lea-Langton, Lecturer in Bioenergy Engineering, Manchester University to my biomass pre-treatment and non-thermal plasma lab in TNBR.

  • I first met Amanda during my postdoc in Newcastle University. We had a collaborative work with her at the time under the Supergen Bioenergy Hub.

  • during her week, we also visited the pre-treatment plant in Kuala Selangor and met with Dr. Oihoong Chin of Uni. Malaya and Dr. Loh Soh Kheang of the Energy & Environment Unit in Malaysian Palm Oil Board.

Overseas Research Exchanges

This was in January 2016 in the State Key Laboratory of Coal Combustion in Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China. I spoke about my research experience which took me to New Zealand, Newcastle (UK), Denmark, Austria and the Manjung power plant in Malaysia.

I was also invited to Hiroshima University for a research exchange on the quantification of sodium through an external cavity diode laser
